1. Create a plan
Creating an educational plan requires you, first of all, to identify and include in your four year course schedule those courses required for graduation. The requirements are set by the state and may be provided by your guidance counselor.

A specific program of courses is also recommended for all students, both those who intend to enter a vocation immediately after high school and those who intend immediately (or later) to enter a postsecondary educational program. Such programs include employer-sponsored training, military training, technical-vocational schools, one and two year certificate programs at community colleges, two year associate degree programs, and baccalaureate programs.

The pattern of courses recommended for all students, including graduation requirements, include:
  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of math
  • 3 years of science
  • 3 years of social studies, and
  • 2 years of foreign language.
In addition, those students intending to continue work toward associate or baccalaureate degrees need to make sure their educational plan meets college entry requirements.

picture of two people talking Students considering entrance into degree programs should also include in their educational plan Advanced Preparation (AP) and other courses bearing college credit that will better qualify them to compete for admission, perform college level course work, possibly shorten the number of years required to achieve their educational goal, and, thus, save some money.

Finally, as part of their educational plan, students should include extra curricular activities, such as part-time work, student activities, and volunteer work that demonstrates interest and provides experience in their chosen career field, as well as, responsibility for and commitment to the welfare of family, community and others.

You should schedule an appointment with your guidance counselor and other appropriate adults to discuss your plan. This is a good time to review college catalogues to familiarize yourself with requirements, programs and courses. You may also want to check out state and national resources that provide educational and vocational planning resources.

Note: If your occupational choices differ from each other in significant ways, you may need to create separate educational plans for each occupation chosen.

You will need to do some additional research, and consult with your guidance counselor, to create a high school education plan.
