What Are Reality Check Calculators?

The tools provided for your use are examples of an approach students can use to estimate the cost of living in a particular state or community. (See below.) The examples provided apply to California and Texas, two states that are making sure their students take a reality check when they are thinking about their future careers. These states also provide links to the information needed. The items include:

  • Type of housing they would like (apartment, condo, house);
  • Utility costs (phone, electricity, cable, etc.);
  • Food (eating out, cooking at home, combination) and transportation needs (public transportation, used or new car, etc.); and
  • Entertainment, and other miscellaneous charges.
Once students have planned out a monthly and annual budget, they have some notion of the salary they will need to support their chosen style of life.

While these examples come from California and Texas, the same approach can be used for any state or community once basic living costs are determined. (Remember, when calculating salary, you must not forget to account for taxes!)
