Title: Parent Involvement and Early Literacy
Date: 2003
Harvard Family Research Project
Researchers looked at whether parent involvement in home earning, school activities, and outside activities had an effect on the literacy levels of their kindergarteners. They also tried to determine if the relationship between parent involvement and early literacy varied for children from different racial/ethnic and income backgrounds. They found that school involvement was "significantly associated" with early literacy (reading, math and general knowledge), and that the relationship was even stronger for children whose families are socially or economically disadvantaged. Home resources and outside activities also had a positive relationship to early literacy.
