Program Goals and Emphasis

Alaska has identified four goals directed toward continuously improving the accessibility and quality of Alaska’s career information tools. They are: 1) develop and maintain accurate, current, locally relevant, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate career information; 2) maximize access to career information and encourage career exploration and planning; 3) promote the integration of career information and planning resources into the classroom; and 4) increase the number of Alaskans with access to quality, state-specific career information.

Economic and Environmental Profile

Alaska has seen job growth for 16 consecutive years. Key industries are: oil, gas and minerals; forestry; agriculture; and fishing. Major growth is forecasted in health care and social assistance and in trade. Other bright spots include construction, mining, and industries supported by visitors—including transportation and hospitality. Following government, retail trade is the largest employing sector.

The January 2006 unemployment rate was 6.7%, as compared to 6.6% in April 2005.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• The Alaska Career Information System (AKCIS) is the only source of comprehensive, state-specific education and career information in Alaska and is available in most schools. AKCIS links education and employment opportunities, as well as career choice and future earnings.

• Alaska distributed the ACRN-funded parent brochures, and a link to these parent brochures will be added to the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education's (ACPE) parent involvement Web site.

• Alaska distributed a list of best-bet occupations (using the 2002-2012 occupational forecast), outlining those with higher than average earnings, growth and employment opportunity.
