Guam Career Resource Network

Program Goals and Emphasis

The Guam CRN is housed at Guam Community College, whose mission as a unique community college, is to be Guam’s lead education agency in training, education, and support services in all ways relating to Guam’s workforce development needs and the career and employment goals of the people. It also works in partnership with industry to advance economic development in Guam as a regional focal point for Micronesia within the Asia-Pacific Rim. Guam CRN’s mission is human resource development in support of Guam’s major social and economic development goals.

Economic and Environmental Profile

Industries include petroleum products, tourism, construction materials, and fishing. Providing goods and services for the large U.S. bases is a major industry. Guam serves as a major shipping center and port of call for large-scale fishing fleets operating in the Western Pacific.

The unemployment rate was 15% in 2004.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• The Guam’s Career Planning Guide was distributed to all high school seniors. It provides information on the career planning process, educational opportunities, fastest growing occupations, and U.S. average earnings by educational attainment, and is designed to encourage increased levels of student transitions to postsecondary education.

• Guam offered a three-credit graduate course to teachers, administrators, and school counselors covering U.S. DoED priorities as they related to improving career-decision making and how to integrate the National Career Development Guidelines into the Guam DOE K-12 Content Standards. The participants created a Career Education Handbook as a final project.

• A publication regarding non-traditional careers on Guam was incorporated into the Career Expo Program Booklet.
