The primary goal of the South Carolina Occupational Information System (SCOIS) is to provide occupational, educational and career information to all students in South Carolina at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. SCOIS also provides this information to students at two- and four-year postsecondary education levels, as well as to adults in One-Stop Workforce Centers, Vocational Rehabilitation workshops, libraries, correctional facilities, etc.

Key industries are textiles, chemicals, paper products, machinery and tourism. Primary agricultural products include
tobacco, poultry, cattle, dairy products, soybeans and hogs. Government is the largest employing sector, followed by manufacturing and retail trade. Industries identified for future growth include automotive, chemical products, textiles, and tourism.
The January 2006 unemployment rate was 6.2%, as compared to 6.5% in April 2005.

• SCOIS distributed 7,676 copies of a parent brochure explaining the 16 career clusters and Individual Graduation Plans. In addition to other parent brochures, parents and students are encouraged to use SCOIS.net from home.
• SCOIS is focused on student transitions to postsecondary education and training through several mechanisms. SCOIS held a training session for 100 transition coordinators to demonstrate the use of SCOIS in the transition process, promoted of the use of the electronic portfolio in SCOIS.Net as a means of successfully transitioning students from the secondary to the postsecondary level, and has located SCOIS in career centers at two-year and four-year colleges.
