American Samoa Career Planning & Workforce Information System

Program Goals and Emphasis

American Samoa Career Planning and Workforce Information System (ASCPWIS) is continuously expanding the information available on its Web site by providing essential information for the users’ range of interests and needs: occupational, employment, career guidance, training and self-development. A network of service providers for mutual clients/customers is maintained through coordination of activities with several organizations and agencies whose services relate to the academic needs and personal self-development of women, youth and adult individuals.

State Economic Profile

Economic and Environmental Profile

American Samoa is an American territory with an economy heavily dependent on exports—particularly processed tuna. Major industries consist of tuna processing plants, including canneries owned by Van Camp and Star Kist, and the port and dry dock facilities of Pago Pago. Tourism is a slowly developing industry. The tuna processing plants are the largest employing entity, followed by government.

The 2000 unemployment rate was 6%, down from 16.7% in 1993.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• The American Samoa CRN is working on a October 2005 Career Vision Event. This event will provide an opportunity for seniors to obtain occupational and educational information from professionals in their area interests, explore military and educational options through invited guest speakers, and socialize among their peers. Visitations were made to junior students to explore educational and occupational options and convey the significance of career planning. Each student completed an essay in which they identified their top two occupational choices—resulting in 1,027 essays.

• The Samoa CRN provided classroom activities for the Summer Youth Employment Program. Program participants aged 14-16 attended sessions with a combination of academic and career activities—including instruction in the required English/Math, participation of a pool of community mentors and provisions for computer hands-on training. Sessions were conducted twice a week.
