Florida Workforce Education - Career, Technical and Adult Education

Program Goals and Emphasis

The primary state goal of the Florida CRN is to provide training and resources to counselors and teachers to assist individuals in career decision-making. State activities are designed to strengthen career development programs by: 1) increasing number of districts that have written school counseling programs using the state framework; 2) influencing policy for the improvement of guidance counseling and advisement; 3) supporting career development through state-provided resources and training; 4) reaching out to teachers and counselors in workshops on labor market information and a variety of educational options.

Economic and Environmental Profile

Major industries are tourism, agriculture and electronics. High growth technology fields include aerospace and telecommunications. The fastest growing careers are expected to be in nursing, customer services, retail sales, business services and construction. This year the legislature passed a bill that requires all districts to have a guidance plan and report on its status each year.

The January 2006 unemployment rate was 3.0%, as compared to 4.2% in April 2005.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• Florida has assisted districts to develop or improve their guidance plans by awarding 42 mini-grants of up to $5,000 per school district. Training is conducted on how to develop a guidance program using Florida's School Counseling and Guidance Framework. All 67 school districts have written guidance plans. Counselors and teachers are trained on how to use labor market information with students. Workshops are also offered to counselors to learn how to use data to show the impact of their programs on student achievement.

• Florida’s Parent Primer is available on-line and can be ordered through the Department of Education Product Catalog at no charge.

• Florida CHOICES is available to schools and agencies on a CD-ROM or the Internet. It provides information on occupations, postsecondary education and financial aid as well as a portfolio for career and education planning for youth and adult audiences.
