Program Goals and Emphasis

Louisiana’s state CRN goals and program emphases are: 1) provide teachers, students and parents resources that assist with career exploration and educational opportunities; 2) provide teachers and counselors with labor market information and training in the use of Louisiana Occupational Information System (LOIS) and the Louisiana Integrated Skills Assessment (LISA).

Economic and Environmental Profile

The main elements of the Louisiana economy are the production of minerals, tourism, forestry, pulp and paper, agriculture and food processing, commercial fishing, shipping and international trade, and general manufacturing. Two CRN related initiatives include the implementation of industry-based certification programs in high schools and colleges and the implementation of WorkKeys.

The April 2005 unemployment rate was 5.1%, as compared to 5.7% in April 2004.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• Louisiana has state legislation mandating career exploration at grades 6, 7, and 8. Seventy-one percent, or 120,078 students, enrolled in grades 6-8 completed a student portfolio in 2003-2004.

• Parent editions of American Careers Magazine are distributed, and several Tech-Prep consortiums continue to offer AWARE, an interactive parent/student workshop that provides resources and information on the parent role in the development of their child's career.

• The Board of Regents and the Department of Education hosted a first ever, multi-agency counselor workshop designed to provide current information relative to academic and career efforts across the state. The Department of Education planned a Comprehensive Guidance Training Scholarship workshop to prepare for implementing comprehensive guidance throughout the state.
