Program Goals and Emphasis

The Maryland CRN’s goals and program emphases focus on the statewide implementation of the standards-based, K-16/Adult Career Development Framework aligned with the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) and Maryland Career Cluster Framework. This is achieved through collaboration with Maryland State Department of Education and all partners: Governor’s Workforce Investment Board, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Maryland Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation, Maryland Higher Education System, University System of Maryland, local school systems and community colleges.

Economic and Environmental Profile

Key products include computers and electronics, defense manufacturing, printing, food, chemicals and plastic and rubber products. The state ranks first in the nation in professional and technical workers as a percentage of the workforce. High technology areas include information technology and services, research, machinery, energy and chemical and biotechnology.

The unemployment rate in January 2006 was 3.6%, as compared to 4.1% in April 2005.

Maryland's largest private employers include: Baltimore Gas and Electric, Bell Atlantic, Giant, Hecht's, Helix, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins University, Northrop Gruman Corporation, United Parcel Service and Wal-Mart.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• Career development writing teams wrote lesson plans and integrated modules to implement the pre-K through postsecondary/adult career development framework. Teams included participants from the Divisions of Instruction, Special Education, Career and Technology, Student and School Services and local school systems to ensure alignment with State Standards and the Voluntary State Curriculum. A postsecondary/adult workforce development sub-committee was formed to develop integrated, standards-based modules consisting of Maryland’s career development standards and Equipped For the Future content standards of the National Institute for Literacy.

• The Student and Assessment Services branch of the Career Technology Division collects, analyzes and reports outcome data on career and technology education programs. Data are analyzed so students can make informed enrollment decisions and local school systems and community colleges can continuously improve their programs.
