North Carolina’s Career Resource Network

Program Goals and Emphasis

NC SOICC, the North Carolina CRN, is a state interagency coordinating committee that oversees the SOICC staff’s development of high quality career information resources and provision of services for counselors, educators, and workforce development professionals. NC SOICC is committed to meeting the career development needs of North Carolina’s youth and adults in a cost effective fashion by leveraging resources and avoiding duplication of efforts.

Economic and Environmental Profile

In terms of employment, North Carolina’s largest sectors are trade, transportation and utilities. This is followed by government, manufacturing, educational and health services, professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality.

The January 2006 unemployment rate was 4.3%, as compared to 5.3% in April 2005.

State Career Resource Activities

Highlighted Activities

• NC SOICC completed paper and electronic publication and dissemination of Department of Public Instruction & SOICC’s Family Toolkit, providing families an overview of career development, North Carolina-specific academic information, and a core of activities that suggest ways to “tweak� everyday events to enrich children’s career development. The Spanish draft of the Toolkit is under review.

• This year NC SOICC developed and published new North Carolina-specific career pathways (clusters) posters linking high school coursework and post-high school education options with specific occupations by pathway. These posters are available online in English and Spanish.

Career Information Delivery Systems (CIDS)

CIDS are computer-based systems providing local, state, and national information about careers and employment opportunities. State sites for CIDS include:

NC Careers provides NC-specific occupational information linked with self-assessments and with post-high school educational opportunities. NC Careers and SOICC Online link to numerous state and national career development resources. Any teenage and adult user with Internet can access the site without cost. Last year’s number of visits to each of NC Careers’ sections totaled:
